In 1995, astronomers selected an area of space for the new Hubble Telescope to focus on that appeared to have no visible stars of any kind. The spot they selected was equivalent to the space covered by the head of a pin extended at arm's length. The image below is the result of two weeks of drawing in light from this tiny, dark space in the sky.

The Hubble Telescope discovered not thousands of stars in this one tiny spot in the universe, but thousands of galaxies - each with hundreds of millions of stars, with each star billions of miles apart from the other.
